Mechanical components


A TYPICAL MODERN CAR has several thousand individual mechanical components. These are
assembled to form the car’s various mechanical systems: engine and exhaust, transmission, steering, suspension, and brakes. To ensure that each system functions properly, components are manufactured to extremely fine tolerances—to within about one ten -thousandth of an inch (one five-hundredth of a millimeter) in some cases.
