These microwaves cannot pass through the compartment’s metal casing, being reflected within and spread evenly by a fan. But they do pass through most types of plastic, ceramics, and glass. Therefore platters or containers made from these materials are suitable for use in microwave ovens. A combination oven also has conventional heating elements, to grill and “brown” in the traditional fashion, either alone or in conjunction with microwaves.
